With Indian Railways launching many new facilities, train travel has become smoother.  An e-ticket can be booked on the internet, from the comfort of your homes, and it only requires a valid identification proof. In addition, cancellation or filing a TDR is also hassle-free now. Here are a couple of Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs) that you should be aware of:

1. Can I cancel an e-ticket, at the railway counters?

If you have booked an e-ticket, you need to cancel the ticket online itself. Cancellation can’t be done at railway counters. Go to www.irctc.co.in and go to ‘Booked Tickets’ link. Select the tickets that need to be cancelled and proceed.

2. What concessions can I get on my train ticket booking?

Senior citizens, both male and female, are eligible for concession of up to 50% of the train ticket fare. All the senior citizens who have availed concessions on train tickets are required to carry proof of age during their journey. Railways issue photo identity cards to physically-challenged persons to enable them to avail concessions on train tickets.

3. Can I get concessions on tatkal ticket?

No concession is available on tatkal tickets.

4. What’s the maximum number of tickets that I am allowed to book?

Individuals are allowed only two tickets per user ID in a day from 8 am to 10 am, and only two tickets per user ID in a day for Tatkal booking from 10 am to 12 pm. A maximum of six tickets can be booked online in a month by an individual.

5. Can I cancel my tickets after chart preparation?

E-tickets cannot be cancelled after chart preparation. In such cases, you can file a TDR.

6. How much refund can I expect when I cancel my train tickets?

If ticket is cancelled within 48 hours and up to 12 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the train, railways deduct 25% of the base fare. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 12 hours and up to 4 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the train, railways deduct 50% of the base fare. In addition, service charges and transaction charges for booking the ticket are non-refundable.

7. Can I get refund on my tatkal ticket cancellation?

No refund is made on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. If waitlisted Tatkal tickets do not get confirmed, they automatically get cancelled and the passenger gets refund.
